The 17 July Revolution was a bloodless coup that took place in Iraq led by General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr in 17 July 1968, which brought the Iraqi-led Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party to power. Both Saddam Hussein, later President of Iraq, and Salah Omar Al-Ali, later a Ba'athist dissident, were major participants in the coup. The 17 July Revolution is not to be confused with the 14 July Revolution, which was a coup that took place on 14 July 1958, overthrowing King Faisal II, ending the Hashemite dynasty in Iraq, and establishing the Republic of Iraq.[citation needed] The Ba'ath Party ruled until an invasion in 2003 led by American and British forces, during which the Ba'ath Party was removed from power and Iraq came under a military occupation by a multinational coalition.[1]
