Review

This LP, which was issued as part of the RCA Vintage Series back in the late 1960s, has 16 selections recorded during a nine-month period in 1926-27. The music ranges from jazz to dance music and novelties and contains more than its share of gems, doing a fine job of summing up the White pop music scene of the time (although completely overlooking the Black artists of the period). Most of the numbers are quite enjoyable. Heard from are George Olsen's Orchestra ("The Varsity Drag"), the Williams Sisters (singing the memorable "Sam, The Old Accordion Man"), Irving Aaronson's Commanders, organist Jesse Crawford, Gertrude Lawrence, the orchestras of Jean Goldkette, Nat Shilkret and Roger Wolfe Kahn, Waring's Pennsylvanians, the Happiness Boys ("That's My Hap-Hap-Happiness"), Gene Austin ("Ain't She Sweet"), B.F. Goodrich Silvertone Cord Orchestra, the Revelers, Charles Dornberger's Orchestra, the Rhythm Boys (with Bing Crosby) and Paul Whiteman (featuring cornetist Henry Busse on "When Day Is Done").
