This CD has all of the performances recorded by cornetist Bobby Hackett and his octet for the World Transcription Series including false starts and alternate takes. The programming by Jazzology is a bit screwy but that can be adjusted with one's CD player. Hackett is in good form; his group includes trombonist Ray Conniff, clarinetist John Peper, Nick Caizza on tenor, pianist Frank Signorelli, guitarist Eddie Condon, bassist Bob Casey and drummer Maurice Purtill. Together they perform nine superior standards including "But Not for Me," "When a Woman Loves a Man," "Embraceable You" and "Sweet Georgia Brown." The fact that the issued versions only take up around 25 minutes means that this CD is mostly recommended to Bobby Hackett completists and to historians rather than more general listeners. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
