The Scottish First Division season 1964-65 was won by Kilmarnock on goal average with both Kilmarnock and Hearts tied on fifty points. Airdrieonians and Third Lanark finished 17th and 18th respectively and were relegated to the 1965-66 Second Division.
In one of the closest finishes ever seen in a league competition in Britain, Hearts faced Kilmarnock on the last day of the season with a 2 point lead over the Ayrshire club and a slightly better goal average. Kilmarnock had to beat Hearts by 2-0 to win the title. Any other result, including any other 2 goal winning margin for Kilmarnock, e.g. 3-1, 4-2, would have made Hearts Champions, as they would have had the superior goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded). And this is exactly what they did, winning 2–0. This was also the first and only time, that neither of the Old Firm clubs did not finish in the top four of the First Division.
