Dr. Nico is a guitar hero, even though he never left the rumba and Zaiko Langa Langa's new youth-quake sound left him a golden oldie. He is the Buddy Bolden of Zaire -- a semi-mythical figure who redefined a music and then disappeared. Of course we do have his records, unlike Bolden, but an overzealous hunt for revolutionary notions in his songs works about as well as trying to dance the lambada to Chicago jazz. This is music of, for, and about a very specific period, and to separate it from its time would be to miss the point. He wasn't necessarily better than every other Zairean guitar player, just righter. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
