The 1971 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held at Binion's Horseshoe. This was the second year that the World Series of Poker was held, however it was the first year that the World Series of Poker 'World Championship' title was awarded by outcome of a Freeze-out Tournament (the previous year it was played in a series of ring games, and the winner was decided by a vote). This new tournament format was used in every year following it.
The new Tournament format was also used for the preliminary events, each a different variety of poker game. The preliminary events were also freeze-out tournaments (although rebuy tournaments were added in later years).

Main Event
There were 6 entrants to the main event. Each paid $5,000 to enter the tournament.[1] The game played was No Limit Texas Hold em.
Johnny Moss's victory this year, was the first time a player had been awarded the Main Event Championship two years in a row. A title that would later be shared by Stu Unger, Doyle Brunson, and Johnny Chan.
