The 1979 Indianapolis 500 was held at Indianapolis on Sunday, May 27, 1979.
After a month of court hearings and controversy due to the start-up CART series, a field of 35 cars takes the green flag (the most since 1933), with second-year driver Rick Mears winning. Born in 1951, he became the first Indy 500 winner born after World War II.

- Qualifying closed with 33 cars in the field. However, the day before the race a special qualifying session was held to allow certain entries a last chance to qualify, who were unable to do so due to a controversy with the CART series.
Each of the cars in question were allowed one qualifying attempt, and if their speed was better than the 33rd fastest (slowest) car in the established field, they would be added to the grid. The arrangement was such that the officials deemed if those cars were among the "fastest 33," they should be allowed in the field. However, none of the 33 cars from the established grid were eligible to be bumped. Of some ten cars that attempted, only two reached the required speed. Thus, two cars were added to the rear of the field, for a total of 35 cars.
