Notable Events

  • From Gilbey's Gin, the La Tondeña franchise became known as Ginebra San Miguel starting the PBA's 11th season, with the ouster of their former coach, Arturo Valenzona, team owner Carlos Palanca offered a role to their main man, the Living legend, Sonny Jaworski, to handle the team as their player-head coach. suddenly the "magic" of the name "Ginebra" grew with more and more fans, particularly the old die-hard Toyota fans supporting the team built around the Big J and Francis Arnaiz. Soon the Trademark chants and the "Never-say-die" spirit was born and became an instant phenomenon.

  • April 11, 1985: Winless after seven games (0-7), playing-coach Sonny Jaworski finally got his first victory in Ginebra's 118-104 win over Manila Beer.
  • August 8, 1985: Ginebra San Miguel forces a knockout game against Shell Azodrin for the second finals slot by winning over the Bugbusters, 101-93, three nights later, Shell knock off Ginebra with an 89-76 win to clinch the finals against defending champion Great Taste.
  • November 5, 1985: The "Living Legend" Sonny Jaworski led Ginebra to a memorable victory over Northern Consolidated, 101-97 in the first playing date of the semifinals, the Big J had to came back from the hospital following an elbow by NCC's Jeff Moore in the second period cut his lips and needed several stitches, Jaworski returned in the final quarter to help, inspired Ginebra to rally back for the win.
  • November 21, 1985: Game One of the battle-for-third place, Michael Hackett scored 103 points as Ginebra defeated Great Taste, 197-168 in the highest-scoring game in PBA History. Hackett's 103-point output broke the record of Larry McNeil's 88 points set in 1983.
