Offseason
- November 9, 1988: Randy Milligan was traded by the Pirates to the Baltimore Orioles for Pete Blohm (minors).[1]
- November 28, 1988: Denny González and a player to be named later were traded by the Pirates to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. The deal was completed on March 25, 1989, with the Pirates sending Félix Fermín to the Indians, and the Indians sending Jay Bell to the Pirates.[2]
