Season Recap

  • OPEN: Anejo 65ers' import for the First Conference was Glen Dedmon, who played six games and led the team to a 4-win, 2-loss record, but was replaced by Sylvester Gray, who immediately made an impact in Anejo's 120-106 win over league-leader Formula Shell on March 20, with Sly Gray, the 65ers went on a winning streak of seven games (eight overall) for an 11-2 card before their streak was halted at the first round of semifinals by Presto Tivoli, 115-113 after the Holy Weekend on April 17, there were earlier complaints by other teams regarding Gray's height being above the 6"5' limit. Anejo Rum lost to Shell in the finals that ended in a walkout by the 65ers in Game 6, with Gray saddled with 5 fouls with still 2:52 left in the second quarter.
  • ALL-FILIPINO: Anejo Rum 65 carried a 7-3 slate in the eliminations, with losses came against the two teams favored to meet in the finals, Presto Tivoli and Purefoods, the 65ers lost their first three games in the semis but rebound to win their last five to avail the 5-win incentive, defeating Purefoods, 136-125 on the last playdate of the semifinals on August 14 for win number five. Anejo lost to San Miguel, 117-132 in a playoff match for the right to meet Presto Tivoli in another playoff to determined the other finalists, the 65ers placed third in the All-Filipino tourney.
  • REINFORCED: missing the services early of playing-coach Robert Jaworski, assistant Rino Salazar, and three key players, Chito Loyzaga, Dante Gonzalgo and Rey Cuenco, who were members of the All-pro team in the Beijing Asian Games, Anejo failed to reach the semifinals of the season-ending conference, compounding their woes was the exit of last year's best import Carlos Briggs, whom the management decided to replaced after a couple of games because of attitude problems, the 65ers bowed out with four wins and six losses in the eliminations, losing their last game and eliminated by Purefoods, 130-118 on November 8, where Jaworski committed a punching foul on Purefoods import Robert Paul Rose when he let go of a flying elbow with seconds left of an already won ballgame by the Hotdogs. the Big J was fined and suspended for one game that took effect the following season.
