- Gambino crime family captain Edward Lino is killed by NYPD detectives Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa on the orders of Lucchese crime family captain Anthony Casso. [1]
- Lucchese crime family member Bruno Facciola is murdered on orders of his boss, Vittorio "Vic" Amuso, after it is learned that he is an FBI informant.
- February 6 - Los Angeles LCN underboss Michael Anthony Rizzitello was convicted of the attempted murder of strip club owner William Carroll who survived three gun shots to the back of his head.
- February 8 - Gambino crime family boss John Gotti and soldier Anthony Guerreri were acquitted of RICO charges involving the shooting of Carpenters Union Local 608 official John O’Connor.
- March 21 - Syndicate gambling czar of West Suburban Elmhurst, Donald Angelini, who had operated a highly successful sports betting empire along with Dominic Cortina, is arrested and sentenced to prison.
- April 19 - John A. Gotti, Jr., son of boss John Gotti married Kim Albanese. The wedding took place at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Howard Beach, Queens and was followed by a reception at the Helmsley Palace Hotel in Manhattan. 1960s rock and roll band Jay and the Americans performed for the crowd.
- May 30 - Federal prosecutors indicted Genovese Family boss Vincent Gigante, underboss Venero Mangano, soldier Joseph Zito, Colombo Family underboss Benedetto Aloi, Lucchese Family boss Vittorio Amuso, underboss Anthony Casso, caporegime Peter Chiodo, and Gambino Family caporegime Peter Gotti on charges of labor racketeering in what was known as the “Windows Case”. Gigante would avoid prosecution by faking mental illness, and appointed Liborio Bellomo as his acting boss while he checked into a psychiatric hospital.
- July 20 - DeCavalcante Family boss Giovanni (John) Riggi and soldier Salvatore Timpani were convicted of federal labor racketeering charges involving their control of Laborers Union Local 394 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Riggi appointed underboss John D’Amato as his acting boss. Riggi would again be indicted for conspiring to kill DeCavalcante Family soldier Gaetano Vastola along with Gambino Family boss John Gotti.
- December 11 - Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, consigliere Frank LoCascio and underboss Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano were arrested and charged with operating a criminal enterprise and ordering the murders of former boss Paul Castellano and soldier Thomas Bilotti.
