Transactions

  • Choose Jaime Vicente Gayoso as their lone pick in the Rookie Draft, became a restricted free agent with the team already completed with a 12-man line-up, Jayvee would debut in Ginebra's last three games of the semifinals of the 1st Conference.
  • Also signed up center Toby Poblador, originally picked by the team three years ago, and rookie free agent Benet Palad.

Season Recap

  • Started off with a 103-99 win over Alaska on February 19, the team had to change imports thrice from Ron Davis to William Alexander and finally, Jervis Cole, the Ginebras were in danger of being eliminated at 3-win, 6-loss, had to win their last two games to became the last team to reach the semifinals at 5-6. after losing their first semis assignment to Shell, 120-121 on April 11, the never-say-die Gins racked up seven straight victories to march into a finals rematch with arch-rivals Shell Turbochargers, the Ginebras made history by coming back from a 1-3 series deficit to win the last three games of the finals series.   • The team failed to make past eliminations in the All-Filipino Conference, dropping to 4 wins and 7 losses. In the Third Conference, Ginebra signed up Wes Matthews, a member of the 1987-88 NBA World Champions Los Angeles Lakers, as their import, Matthews led Ginebra to a 7-4 card at the end of the elimination round, the Gins won their first five semis games for a return trip to the PBA finals, this time playing against the Alaska Milkmen, See:1991 PBA Third Conference Finals. the Ginebras lost 3-1, in the best-of-five finals series, with rumors abound possible changes in their lineup next season following the reduced playing time of some of their key players in Game 4 finals loss to Alaska.

  • April 21: down by 19 points in the 4th quarter of their semis game against Diet Sarsi, Ginebra battled back behind Dondon Ampalayo and import Jervis Cole, with only 32 seconds left and still trailing 117-124, a final 9-1 windup gave the team a dramatic 126-125 come-from-behind victory.
  • May 2: Ginebra led 16-0 over importless-Purefoods early in the first quarter and never look back in a 126-108 victory to set the stage for an explosive finals grudge rematch opposite last year's championship rival, the Shell Rimula-X Turbochargers.
  • November 12: In an all-important semifinals match against Pepsi, game tied with only few seconds remaining and ball possession for the Hotshots, Wes Matthews stole the ball from a dribbling Willie Generalao and then let go of a 35-footer with one second left, giving Ginebra a 123-120 victory, the team's seventh consecutive win and 12th overall in 16 games, assuring them of one of the two finals berth.
