While Pakistan moved closer to peaceful negotiation with Afghanistan in 1993, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dissolved the National Assembly of Pakistan and dismissed the Nawaz government. Toward the end of the year, Farooq Laghari was appointed the eighth president and Benazir Bhutto was ushered into office yet again.
