The 1999 FA Charity Shield was a football match held on 1 August 1999 at Wembley Stadium. The teams involved were Manchester United, who had won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League the previous season, and Arsenal, who had finished as runners-up to United in the league. Arsenal won the match 2–1, with goals from Nwankwo Kanu and Ray Parlour. Dwight Yorke scored the opening goal for the Red Devils. This defeat was Manchester United's first in 34 matches in all competitions - their previous competitive defeat having come at home to Middlesbrough who had beaten them 3–2 at Old Trafford in the league on 19 December 1998.
Making their debuts for Arsenal on the day were Brazilian midfielder Sylvinho and Ukrainian defender Oleh Luzhny.
Manchester United's only "debutant" was Mark Bosnich, who had actually played a few games for them at the beginning of the decade and just rejoined them after eight seasons with Aston Villa.
