1E is a privately owned software company based in the United Kingdom.[1] 1E has offices in London, New York, Frankfurt, Paris, and Noida. The company develops automated software solutions to address complexity, management costs and power consumption. 1E has developed products to reduce the energy consumption of IT hardware, such as personal computers, monitors and servers.[2]
History
1E was founded in 1997 by three former Microsoft contractors, Sumir Karayi, Phil Wilcock, and Mark Blackburn, who each contributed £500 to start the company.[3][4][5] Karayi now owns most of the shares of the company after he bought out Wilcock and Blackburn.[3] Today the company has more than 16 million licenses deployed worldwide, across 1,400 organizations in 42 countries. Its customers are drawn from public and private sectors across the world and include AT&T, Dell, HSBC, Arup, and Ford Motor Company.
The company's name is derived from a computer error. When some Microsoft Windows computers crash, a blue screen containing 1E appears.[3] This name was chosen because the founders wished that 1E could prevent this from happening to big companies.[5]
Products
1E develops the following software products which run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems:
- NightWatchman Server Edition measures how much power is being used by servers and identifies which are being inefficient. It monitors the amount of useful activity across physical and virtual servers enabling unused ones to be decommissioned with confidence.[6]
- NightWatchman® Enterprise – is a market-leading, comprehensive PC power management solution which combats the 50% of PCs that are left on, draining power unnecessarily, overnight and on weekends.[7]
- WakeUp is Wake-on-LAN product used to power on PCs remotely for software updating. NightWatchman and WakeUp are often sold together as a Power and Patch Management Pack.[8] WakeUp includes a software component for the iPad and iPhone to manage WakeUps remotely.
- Nomad Enterprise uses spare network bandwidth to deliver operating system upgrades, software deployments and patches safely and securely to thousands of PCs and servers, day or night, with zero disruption. It enables OS releases, software applications and updates to be distributed to remote server-less branch offices and bandwidth-challenged environments and reduces server footprint and administrative overhead.[9]
- Shopping is the app store for the enterprise which enables software self-service and automates the request, approval and delivery process, meaning that users can download the software and services they need at any time and within minutes. This minimizes software requests to the helpdesk and delivering savings of €28 on average per request.[10]
- AppClarity, Software Asset Management software seeks out unused software in an enterprise, financially quantifies the waste caused by that unused software, reclaims and reuses the unused licenses and eliminates unnecessary license liability making it possible for enterprises to only use – and pay for – the software and licenses they need.
Research
In 2009 1E and the Alliance to Save Energy commissioned independent research into the awareness and behavior of PC users and server administrators in the world's largest companies.[11][12][13][14]
The PC Energy report revealed that nearly half of all corporate PCs in the US are not regularly switched off at night. This adds up to approximately 108 million work PCs being left switched on overnight costing US businesses in the region of $2.8 billion in energy costs. In terms of carbon emissions this equates to approximately 20 million tons, roughly the equivalent impact of 4 million cars.[12][15][16]
In 2010 1E commissioned Vanson Bourne to conduct research into Help Desk Efficiency. The resulting report highlighted a number of challenges for IT departments. More than a third of users perceive little or no value from the money their IT department spends on them each year. More than 50% of users have to chase every request they make at least one to make sure they receive the software they ask for and more than two thirds (68%) of users feel it would be quicker and easier to find and install software themselves. Rather than contacting their IT help desk.[17]
The Software Efficiency report published in 2011 with Fast IiS, Opinion Matters and IAITAM found extensive waste in unused software and shelfware, accounting for £1.7 billion in the UK alone. Responses found that 47% of enterprises still use spreadsheets to record software licenses with 6% still using a paper-based filing system and a staggering 16% using nothing whatsoever.[18]
Competitors
1E has a number of competitors[19] offering similar PC Power Management software products. These include Data Synergy PowerMAN (Software),[20] Verdiem SURVEYOR[21] and Faronics Power Save.[22][23]
