Review

On her second solo album, singer Daúde continues his post-mangue beat project, mixing northeastern roots with cybernetic technology. "Pata Pata" (by the African Mirian Makeba) was a hit on the radio before it was released on this album. "Une Chanson Triste," a beautiful melody, even in its drum'n'bass groove (with cuícas), sounds a bit sad -- an impression dissolved in the energetic rap "A Boca Sujou." Respect for roots? "Afrolodum Multimídia" sets the tone --"A fibra ótica é ótima, mas não conduz percussão" (Optic fiber is great, but doesn't conduce percussion). It also has the Gilberto Gil reggae "Vamos Fugir," with special guest Djavan. "Casa Caiada" is a vibrant northeastern groove with Afro-Caribbean influences in the guitar, and "As Baratas" is a wonderful jongo by Darcy da Serrinha. An original moment is shared with the genuine sambista do morro Nelson Sargento, where each one has his own dialect in an implausible atmosphere. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
