2 Bad Mice formed in England in 1991, and was composed of Sean O'Keeffe, Simon Colebrooke, and Rob Playford, the latter the owner of the Moving Shadow record label. 2 Bad Mice were credited as among the first UK hardcore acts to begin incorporating breakbeats into their style.[citation needed] They were a staple on the early to mid 1990s hardcore scene, and were instrumental in the music's steady mutation into jungle/drum and bass.[citation needed]
The group's influential approach to sampled beats, cutting them up into shards of rhythm and rearranging them in novel combinations (first appearing in mature form on the 1992 hit "Bombscare"), is generally considered the blueprint from which jungle's characteristic manipulation of breaks was assembled.[citation needed]
Although 2 Bad Mice for the most part stopped producing as the hardcore scene began to wane, a best-of compilation of the group's work appeared on the American Sm:)e Communications label in 1995. Playford continues to record as under the alias Timecode, while O'Keeffe records under the name Deep Blue and as a member of Black Rain.
In 1994 DJ and producer Paul Rhodes alongside Rob Haigh (Omni Trio) remixed "Bombscare" under the nom de plume of The Parliament Squares. This record was sold to record shops as a (fake) U.S. import and sold 3,000 copies in one week alone.[citation needed]
A new label was created in 1996 with the help of Terry Donavan (A&R at Arista Records, now CEO at Rockstar Games). This label, Moshed (MOving Shadow HousE Dept), carried the new mixes from Tall Paul, DJ Sneak, and Graham Gold along with the original and Parliament Squares versions. Rhodes went on to front the press and promo campaign, touring with the other new member Brucella.
O'Keeffe, Colebrooke and Rhodes currently DJ worldwide as 2 Bad Mice, whilst also promoting their own old-school events with many of the original innovators of the scene.[citation needed]
