In the National Football League, there have been six running backs in the history of the league that have run for at least 2,000 yards in a single season. O. J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills was the first player to accomplish the feat, rushing for 2,003 yards in 1973. Simpson is the only player to have ever rushed for 2000 yards in a 14-game season, as the five others who accomplished the feat all did so in a 16-game season (Simpson's 2003 yards in 14 games is the equivalent of 2289 yards for 16 games). The most recent occurrence was in 2009 when Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans rushed for 2,006 yards.[1]
Eric Dickerson holds the record for most rushing yards in a season with 2,105 in 1984.[2]
No season to date has produced more than one 2,000-yard rusher. No franchise has had more than one 2,000 yard rusher.
