Notes

  • First pole position: Juan Pablo Montoya
  • Last podium: Jacques Villeneuve
  • Last points (Team): Prost
  • First and only points of 2001 for Jenson Button.
  • The race was stopped on the first lap due to Luciano Burti's Prost hitting the back of the slow-starting Ferrari of Michael Schumacher. It was restarted over the original distance. Burti was launched several feet into the air during the incident, but escaped injury and made the restart. He eventually spun off on lap 24.
  • The two Minardis started from the pit lane at the first start, but took their original grid positions at the second start.
  • Heinz-Harald Frentzen was sacked by the Jordan team and forced to miss his home race.
  • Ricardo Zonta replaced Frentzen for this race, having done the same in Canada earlier in the season.
  • Last technical failure during a race on Michael Schumacher's Ferrari until the 2005 Bahrain Grand Prix.
  • It was the last time that both drivers from the Benetton team scored world championship points.
  • Last Grand Prix at the old Hockenheimring.
  • This was Jean Alesi's last race for the Prost team. He would take Frentzen's place at Jordan from the next race onwards, and Frentzen would take Alesi's place at Prost.
