29-year-old Pete Sampras was the four-time defending champion, but he lost in the fourth round to 19-year-old and future six-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer in what would be one of the most notable matches in tennis history. Although Sampras and Federer would later play each other in exhibition matches, this was the only match when the two played each other in any ATP tournament, and it is today recognised as a symbolic changing of the guard, with the new generation's greatest champion, Federer, defeating Sampras, the previous generation's best.

Goran Ivanišević became this tournament's champion, defeating Patrick Rafter, 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 2–6, 9–7, in the final. He became the first wild card to win a major. The win was especially satisfying for Ivanišević, as he had made the finals three times before (in 1992, 1994 and 1998) but lost each (to Agassi, and Sampras twice, respectively). The win was made all the more notable since Ivanišević was two points from losing in the semi-final to Tim Henman.
