- December 21, 2001: Johnny Damon signed a four-year, $31 million contract to join the Boston Red Sox
- February 13, 2002: Rickey Henderson signed as a Free Agent with the Boston Red Sox.
Regular season
- Pedro Martinez became the first player to win 20 games in one season but pitch less than 200 innings.[2]
- Seven Red Sox players were voted on to the American League roster for the 2002 All Star Game played in Milwaukee, WI at Miller Park. Pitcher Derek Lowe, left fielder Manny Ramirez and third baseman Shea Hillenbrand started the game, while pitchers Pedro Martinez and Ugueth Urbina joined shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and outfielder Johnny Damon as reserves.
