Spotlight: The Titanic sank on this date in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg. Some 1,500 lives were lost. The British luxury liner was on its maiden voyage, sailing from England to New York City, and was thought to be unsinkable. In 1985, the wreck was located near Newfoundland by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The blockbuster film Titanic won 11 Oscars and was the largest-grossing film of all time.
