The first US airmail service took off between Washington, DC, and New York, on this date in 1918. The pilot got lost en route, and never completed that first trip. On the same date, twelve years later, the first airline stewardess went on duty aboard a United Airlines flight between San Francisco and Cheyenne. In the late 1970s, stewardesses were renamed "flight attendants," and more and more men have joined the ranks of on-board hosts.
