Spotlight: Cellist and composer Jacques Offenbach was born on this date in 1819. One of the creators of the operetta, Offenbach was most famous for the more serious opera, Tales of Hoffmann. Though the opera was unfinished at the time of Offenbach's death, his best friend, Ernest Guiraud, completed the opera for him, and it was first performed in 1881. Sixty years later it was made into a movie.
Quote: "No opera plot can be sensible, for people do not sing when they are feeling sensible."W.H. Auden
