Spotlight: It's been exactly 25 years since John Lennon was shot to death outside his apartment building, The Dakota, in New York City. The former Beatle was returning from a recording studio with wife Yoko Ono when a deranged fan, Mark David Chapman, shot him from behind. A noted peace activist, Lennon described his own utopian view in his song "Imagine." Recorded in 1971 on the Imagine album, the song is usually in the top songs among British voters, and on January 1, 2005, CBC listeners voted "Imagine" the greatest song of the past 100 years.
Quote: "I get by with a little help from my friends."John Lennon
Word of the day: skiffle: a kind of folk music with jazz and blues undertones, often using homemade percussion instruments; John Lennon's skiffle group, The Quarrymen, eventually morphed into The Beatles. )
