Alfred, Lord Tennyson, famous for his epic poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade," was born on this date in 1809. Britain's poet laureate for more than 40 years, Lord Tennyson was one of Victorian England's most popular poets. He wrote of the ideas and mores of the time. In 1883, Tennyson was made a peer and took a seat in the House of Lords. Among his other famous poems are "The Lotus-Eaters," "The Lady of Shalott," and his narrative poems on the life of King Arthur, Idylls of the King.
