The first prime minister of independent Singapore was born on this date in 1923. Lee Kuan Yew led Singapore from 1959 until his resignation in 1990, choosing to remain in the government as a senior minister and minister mentor. Lee is credited with creating equal rights for women, industrializing his country and raising the standard of living for Singapore's citizens. The third and current prime minister of Singapore is Lee's son, Lee Hsien Loong.
