Overview

With Stoke narrowly missing out on a play-off spot at the end of last season there were high hopes that Stoke would go one better and achieve promotion.

There was little transfer activity in the summer with Richard Cresswell and unknown defender Ryan Shawcross the main recruits. Stoke started the season well with wins over Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic saw Stoke top the table. Stoke then went through a poor run of form with just four wins out of ten however several loan signings such as Leon Cort and Danny Pugh joined and would become key players as the season progressed.

After a drab 0–0 draw at Burnley Stoke went on a 17 game unbeaten run including 6 straight wins. This propelled Stoke to the top of the table however too many draws in the final few games of the season cost Stoke the title but 2nd place was achieved and promotion the Premier League. It took Stoke 24 years to reclaim a place in the top flight and the supporters celebrated with a pitch invasion and an open-top bus tour around the city.
