The early 2010s (2010–present) have thus far been defined by a mix of military influenced fashions, early 1990s neon colors, and a large-scale revival of 1930s, 1950s and 1980s fashions. In the early 2010s, many mid and late 2000s fashions remain popular, including the 1960s Fashion incorporated into an indie pop look, while youth subcultures and celebrities incorporated alternative fashion styles.
General trends
Combat boots, often embellished with studs or spikes, were popular among British women between 2010-2012
- Madras shirts with tartan prints and bright colored casual clothing[2] are popular for both men and women in the West. While Western shirts remain fashionable,[3] especially in the UK and southern US, they are generally made in more subdued colors than those of the mid-2000s:[4] browns, greys, blues, and distressed stonewash denim[5] with conventional buttons[6] rather than the popular press studs as designers moved towards a more authentic Old West[7] or American pioneer look.
- Vintage clothing remained popular, although it was becoming increasingly common to cut unused stock of older fabric to modern patterns[8] or remake older garments into reconstructed clothing, for example, by sewing white cotton tape around the lapels of a navy blue 1990s blazer, or go to extremes and make a shirt from deliberately mismatched scraps of fabric.[9]
Women's clothing
Early 2010s
- The early 2010s, so far, have seen many recycled fashions from the 1950s,[13] 1970s and 1980s such as acid wash skinny jeans,[14] bell-bottoms, tunics, baseball jackets,[15] denim print leggings, oversized cardigans, 1940s New Look dresses and trenchcoats, leg warmers, Ray-Ban Wayfarer or aviator sunglasses, romper suits,[16][17] Tube tops, western shirts, Perfecto motorcycle jackets customized with studs,[18] job skirts, floral camisoles worn with matching hot pants, sundresses, pencil skirts, jean skirts, jeans, leggings, knee socks peeking out over flat knee boots with skirts,, short dresses or over leggings or jeans, rain boots, Keds,TOMS Shoes, Chucks, Nike Tempo Shorts, colored jeans, and small handbags rather than the large designer It bags of the early-2000s.[19]
- Other notable European, Australasian and American trends include alpaca wool Peruvian hats,[20] geek chic inspired nerd glasses, lace, figure-hugging white organza maxi dresses inspired by Pippa Middleton,[21] knee high boots, microskirts, stilettos, dark leggings, clutches, sparkly dresses, high top sneakers,[22] and baggy one-size-fits-all Empire line skirts, blouses and dresses. In America it is also very popular to wear designer brands like Gucci, Abercrombie & Fitch, Baby Phat, Sperry Top-Sider, or Eastland boat shoes, Dooney & Bourke, neon colors such as pink, green, teal, black, purple, and yellow.[23] In Britain and Australia Uggs,[24] flip-flops, Ballerina flats, cavalier boots,[25] Doc Martens, and gladiator sandals are very popular footwear for women.
Mens clothing
Early 2010s
- In the early 2010s, many styles from the late 2000s remain fashionable in both Europe and America, including Ed Hardy T shirts,[27] Polo Ralph Lauren, J Crew,[28] shawl collar cardigans,[29] V-neck t-shirts, Cargo pants, shemaghs, skinny jeans, aviator sunglasses,[30] wayfarer sunglasses, Tartan flannel shirts, converse all-stars, acid wash denim work shirts,[31] cable knit pullovers,[32] Nike Air Jordans, Vans, and retro sneakers, flat caps, newsboy caps, black leather jackets like the Schott Perfecto,[33] and slim fit grey mohair and houndstooth office suits with narrow lapels[34] inspired by the American TV show Mad Men and the 1960s revival of the mid-2000s.[35]
- New European and American fashions include Bermuda shorts, pork pie hats, trilbys,[36] turtle neck sweaters, denim jackets,[37] Aloha shirts, car coats,[38] 1930s style linen sportcoats, tortoise shell glasses,[39] snake skin[40] or plaited leather belts,[41] tapered jeans, Uggs,[42][43] tartan coats, espadrilles,[44] straw hats, skechers, Timberland work boots,[45] orange anoraks, 1980s style sheepskin coats, padded flannel shirts, khaki chinos[46] throwback anoraks based on those worn by Edmund Hilary's Mount Everest Expedition,[47][48] knitted Scandinavian-style "ugly sweaters",[49] 1930s style shirts with rounded collars, paisley scarfs, Navy blue peacoats,[50] tweed topcoats,[51] double-breasted raincoats,[52] single-breasted suits with peaked lapels inspired by the TV show Boardwalk Empire,[53] and Belstaff safari jackets.[54][55]
- In Britain, there has been a resurgence of Edwardian fashions[56] among indie kids, sloane rangers, and college students, including suits with contrasting piping,[57] boots based on US Civil War era Jeff Davis boots,[58] Barbour jackets,[59] bowler hats,[60] Homburg hats, seersucker or tweed sportcoats, waistcoats, thin ties, Ascots, dress boots, cricket-style sleeveless sweaters (also very popular in India), velvet jackets, and striped boating blazers, albeit in less loud colors than the type worn by the mod subculture in the 1960s.[61][62][63] This retro style semi-formal wear is often paired with modern casual clothing and accessories like Topman or Superdry T shirts, Jack Wills sweatpants, sneakers, scarfs, record bags, Doc Martens, and jeans.[64]
- In 2012, 1990s fashion made a comeback in the US, including trucker hats, chinos, grunge style padded tartan overshirts, beige cargo pants, Chucks, combat boots, throwback basketball or baseball uniforms, baggy jeans, and preppy Nantucket Reds. Colors like navy blue, grey, red, dark green, khaki, and white were popular.[65]
Youth fashion
Early 2010s
- In the early 2010s, many scene kids abandoned the cartoon print hoodies, skinny jeans and studded belts in favor of a more hardcore/skate punk look with wifebeaters, plain hoodies, combat boots, Vans, tapered jeans, and stretched earlobe piercings,[66] except in parts of Latin America, like Fortaleza, where late-2000s scene and emo fashion remained common until 2012.[67]
- In America, preppies have moved away from the hip-hop influenced fashions of the early 2000s and begun to dress in a more classic 1950s Ivy League style,[68] with sweaters, boat shoes especially Sperry Top-Sider or Eastland boat shoes, Aran sweaters, cardigans, Leggings, Nike Tempo Shorts, ballet flats, Oxford shirts, wingtips, stripy polo shirts, hats like the fedora, and khaki or pastel colored Vineyard Vines, colored jeans, Uggs, rain boots, knee socks peeking out over flat knee boots with skirts or short dresses or over jeans or leggings, slacks.[69]
- Hip-hop fans wear tactical pants, Nike Air Jordans, Ralph Lauren Polo Boots, Hollister T shirts, and goggle jackets.[70][71] Retro 1980s fashions like snapbacks, skinny acid wash jeans, Baseball jackets, Varsity Jackets, Vans, Chuck Taylors, rain boots, Retro Nikes, Shell Tube socks, denim jackets, Levis, tight miniskirts, Air Jordans, oversized sweaters, and colors like red, green, and yellow, made a comeback in the African American community.
- An American and Japanese take on the Neo-Edwardian fashion popular in Britain draws heavily upon the steampunk genre, including goggles,[74] respirators, brass gears, pocket watches, leather, Leggings, ballet flats, silver or brass jewellery, and darker colors like brown, grey and black.[75][76]
- In some parts of the United States, in particular California, a mix of hip-hop, emo, and indie fashion became common, especially skinny jeans, trucker hats, Nike shoes, Vans, Levi's 501 jeans,[77] Dickies shorts, pocket watches,[78] flannel shirts, thin ties, Chucks, Keds, ballet flats, Nike Tempo Shorts, colored jeans, Leggings, rain boots, knee socks peeking out over flat knee boots with skirts or short dresses or over jeans or leggings, vintage tees,[79] plain tees with contrasting edging, and Vans.[80] Shirts and hoodies with messages such as "cool story bro" or the logos of dubstep, screamo, alternative rock, and heavy metal bands like Asking Alexandria, and deadmau5 became popular among scene kids.
- In England, vintage clothing, especially checked shirts and homemade jewellery, remain popular among girls and boys alike.[81][82] Drop crotch pants designed by the Danish brand Hümor became more and more popular in Europe amongst hipsters and hip hop fans who replaced their skinny jeans and carpenter jeans with "old school but modern" style.[83][84]
Hair and makeup of the 2010s
Womens hairstyles
In America, younger women favour volumized curly hair,[85] feathered hair,[86] and the Rachel haircut that trended in the early-mid 1990s and headbands of all sizes colors, and designs. European women favor the ponytail, French braid, messy bun,[87] and hime cut,[88] also common in Southern Brazil. The pixie cut and bob cut are popular in Japan and urban Southeastern Brazil.[citation needed] In Britain the long, straight or wavy side-banged hair of the late-2000s remains popular,[89] often kept in place with a cloth headband[90] or plastic Alice band. In spring 2012 jet black hair inspired by Katy Perry, Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian, has become increasingly popular among young American women, especially those who are naturally brunettes,[91] while bleached blonde hair remains common in the UK.[92]
Mens hairstyles
For men, short hair remains the norm, although it is becoming increasingly popular in the early 2010s to grow it out "short with texture," with blunt ends inspired by contemporary pop groups and the young James Dean.[93] 1940s and 1950s haircuts have undergone a revival, with many British professionals wearing side partings,[94] quiffs[95] or slicked back hair.[96][97] In America goatees[98] and short haircuts like the buzzcut remain popular.[99] For African-American men, cornrows, variants of the Afro, 360 Waves and jheri curl are coming back.
Youth hairstyles
Many teenagers, especially indie teens and preppies, continue to wear the mid-length surfer hair and wings haircuts in the early 2010s, while English chavs and Canadian ravers wear a type of short mullet or fauxhawk inspired by Wiz Khalifa, with a single blonde stripe down the center and patterns known as train tracks shaved into the sides. Headbands thick and skinny of all colors and designs are popular. Undercuts (nicknamed "Hitler Youth haircuts),[100][101] pompadours,[102] wide unstyled mohawks, beards, side-banged hair and long 1970s hairstyles are popular among older hipsters. Emo style fringes went out of fashion[103][104] and an increasing number of scene kids began to cut their hair short for a hardcore punk look, a move away from the androgynous big hair popular in the late-2000s.[105] Around 2012, a long undercut or mohawk-like haircut, in which only one side of the head is buzzed, became popular among circles of ravers, metalcore, and dubstep fans in the US, possibly because of its similarity to that of musician Skrillex.[106] In 2012 the High Top Fade, often with a bleached blonde streak, came back into style among African American youth on the West Coast; variations include the Gumby, a slanted box with one side higher than the other, and the Stair steps, where the High Top is made uneven and gradually goes up higher.
Body modifications
Tattoos and body piercings, popularised in the 1990s, are ubiquitous in early 2010s Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States and urban Center-Southern Brazil, becoming a rite of passage and a permanent change in fashion itself.[107][108] Some of the more extreme include flesh tunnels, snakebites, nose piercings, and Monroe piercings.[107] Tattoos and piercings are worn not only by teenagers and young adults, but also by many businesspeople ages 26–40.[109]
