Overview

Rangers played a total of 45 competitive matches during the 2011-12 season. Following the change of ownership at the close of the previous season, and the resignation of manager Walter Smith, the season began with a drawing with Hearts, with assistant manager Ally McCoist promoted to the hot seat.

With the new ownership securing the financial stability of the club, Rangers began their first season in recent years without a significant lack of funds with which to acquire new players. McCoist managed to secure several first team regulars on short term contract extensions, and long term extensions for goalkeeper Allan McGregor, and Steven Whittaker. With McCoist able to enter the transfer market, the playing squad had several faces added, beginning with Almería midfielder Juan Manuel Ortiz.

Rangers's first Scottish Premier League match of the season was a home match against Jim Jefferies' Hearts, where the league flag was unfurled by new owner Craig Whyte. This proved to be a baptism of fire for McCoist, as Rangers were under considerable pressure for most of the first half, but managed to salvage a draw.

Ranger's European adventure began in the middle of the final week of July, where Rangers were defeated by underdogs Malmö 1-0 at home. The following week, after McCoist claimed his first competitive victory as manager in the SPL over St. Johnstone, Rangers crashed out of the Champions League with a bad tempered 1-1 draw in Sweden in which both Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra were both given their marching orders, and ultimately relegating the Gers to the Europa League play-off round, where they faced Slovenian team NK Maribor.

On 14 February 2012 Rangers entered administration over an alleged non-payment of £9 million in PAYE and VAT taxes to HM Revenue and Customs.[1][2] On entering administration, the team was deducted 10 points by the SPL, a move regarded as 'effectively ending' its 2012 championship challenge.[1] Rangers have not submitted accounts for last tax year yet and it is unlikely they will be granted a licence to play in European football next season.[3][4]

Whyte sold his controlling interest in Rangers for £2 to a consortium led by Charles Green on 13 May 2012.[5] Green will offer creditors a settlement in an attempt to exit administration.[5]
