The 2011–12 Ukrainian Premier League season was the 21st since its establishment and fourth since its reorganisation. The season began on July 8, 2011 when newly promoted PFC Oleksandria visited FC Vorskla Poltava.[2] FC Shakhtar Donetsk were the defending champions, having won their 6th league title in the 2010–11 season and they successfully defended their title by winning the championship in the last round of the competition.[3][4]
A total of sixteen teams participated in the league, the best fourteen sides of the 2010–11 season and two promoted clubs from the 2010–11 Ukrainian First League.
The competition had a winter break which began on December 11, 2011 and the season resumed on March 3, 2012. The season concluded on May 10, 2012.[1]

FC Sevastopol and last-placed Metalurh Zaporizhya of the 2010–11 Ukrainian Premier League were relegated to the 2011–12 Ukrainian First League. Being a founding member of the Premier League, Metalurh Zaporizhya will be playing in the second tier of the Ukrainian league pyramid for the first time since Ukrainian independence in 1991. FC Sevastopol returned to the Ukrainian First League after only a one-season absence.
The two relegated teams were replaced by the champions and the runners-up of the 2010–11 Ukrainian First League. PFC Oleksandria gained promotion after defeating FC Lviv in the 32nd Round[5] and Chornomorets Odesa gained promotion also after defeating FC Lviv in the 33rd Round of the 2010–11 Ukrainian First League season.

1 Metalurh Donetsk qualified for the Europa League as losing finalist of the 2011–12 Ukrainian Cup to Champions League-qualified Shakhtar Donetsk. Moreover, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Arsenal Kiev were moved up a round as the cup winner spot was not used.
