The 2012 Australian Open was a tennis tournament that took place in Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia from 16-29 January. It was the 100th edition of the tournament and the first Grand Slam of the year. World number one Novak Djokovic led the field. The other top ten seeds were: ten time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal, record sixteen time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, three time Grand Slam finalist Andy Murray, David Ferrer, 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomáš Berdych, Mardy Fish, 2001 Australian Open Junior title champion Janko Tipsarević and Nicolás Almagro.

Before the start of the 2012 Australian Open, Florian Mayer of Germany withdrew from the men's singles draw at the Australian Open with a hip strain. The International Tennis Federation replaced 20th-seeded Mayer with South Africa's Rik de Voest, who got the main draw spot after a lottery involving the four highest-ranked players who lost in qualifying. All the seeds apart from Fernando Verdasco, Juan Mónaco, Ivan Ljubičić, Radek Štěpánek and Jurgen Melzer made it to the second round. The second round witnessed all the seeds advancing except Fish who lost to Alejandro Falla, Gilles Simon to compatriot Julien Benneteau, Viktor Troicki to Mikhail Kukushkin, Marcel Granollers to Frederico Gil and Alex Bogomolov, Jr. to Michael Llodra, while Andy Roddick had to retire because of a hamstring injury against wildcard Lleyton Hewitt. The third round saw some seeded players meet for the first time in the competition. Seventeenth seed Richard Gasquet defeated ninth seed Tipsarević, eighteenth seed Feliciano López defeated sixteenth seed John Isner, tenth seed Almagro defeated twenty-first seed Stanislas Wawrinka, Ferrer defeated twenty-seventh seed Juan Ignacio Chela and Berdych defeated Kevin Anderson. The third round also witnessed all the seeds advancing except thirteenth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov who went out to Bernard Tomic, fourteenth seed Gael Monfils who lost to Kukushkin and twenty-third seed Milos Raonic who went out to Hewitt. The fourth round saw twenty-fourth seeded Kei Nishikori end Tsonga's run, the biggest upset in the tournament then, while Berdych edged out Almagro, Ferrer defeated Gasquet and Nadal defeated Feliciano Lopez. Kukushkin went out to Murray, Philipp Kohlschreiber to Juan Martin del Potro, Hewitt to Djokovic and Tomic to Federer.

Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray successfully made their way into the semifinals by defeating Ferrer, Berdych, Potro and Nishikori respectively with Federer and Murray winning in straight sets. The semifinals witnessed Djokovic taking out Murray in five sets while Nadal overcame Federer in four sets. In the final, Djokovic defeated Nadal for his third Australian Open crown.

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion^[1] and successfully defended his title against Rafael Nadal in the final. The final took 5 hours and 53 minutes to complete, which was the longest match in Australian Open history and the longest Grand Slam singles final in the Open Era.^[2]This match marked the third consecutive loss to Djokovic by Nadal and thus he went on to become the first player to lose three Grand Slam finals in a row in the Open Era.^[3]
