This article lists events related to rail transport that are currently scheduled to occur in 2012. Please be aware that the actual dates that these events occur on may differ substantially from what is shown here.

Events

• 14 January – Construction is expected to be completed on the Marina Bay Extension of the Circle MRT Line.^[1]
• 4 February – National Express's East Anglia franchise expires
• 22 February – Rail accident in Buenos Aires's Once railway station. 51 people are killed.
• 3 March – Head-on collision in Poland. 16 people are killed.
• 25 March – The north shore connector extension of the Pittsburgh Light Rail system opened
• 23 April – Boston's MBTA Commuter Rail Providence/Stoughton Line extension to Wickford Junction (MBTA station) is scheduled to open
• 28 April – Construction is expected to be completed on the first phase of Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Expo Line. The line will run from downtown LA to Culver City. The next phase of the project will extend the line to Santa Monica.^[2]
• 30 April – Construction is expected to be completed and service commencing on the AirportLink line of the Miami Metrorail, extending service to Miami International Airport via Miami Central Station^[3]
• 27 May – GoRail starts operating on Tallinn–Saint Petersburg line after a four-year hiatus.^[4]

Unknown date events

• – Seattle's Sounder commuter rail south line extension to South Tacoma and Lakewood is scheduled to open
• – In June the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (UPT)/Loyola Avenue corridor streetcar line is scheduled to open
• – Starting in December the Orange Line (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) will carry passengers to Belt Line. The plan is then to have the line extended to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport by 2014
• – In December the Blue Line (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) extension to the Downtown Rowlett Station is planned to open
• – Early in the year The Sacramento Regional Transit District Green Line phase 1 to River District is scheduled to open. A future extension is planned to extend this line to the Sacramento International Airport but is not expected to be completed until sometime during the 2020s.^[5]
• - The Manchester Metrolink light rail system will open the first phase of its East Manchester Line and the first phase of its Oldham & Rochdale Line
• – Construction was expected to be completed on New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority's East Side Access project to bring Long Island Rail Road trains into Grand Central Terminal.^[6] Date has slipped to 2016.^[7]
• – Construction is schdueled to begin on the Downtown San Francisco Extension, which will extend the Caltrain line 1.3 miles (2.1 km) from the current terminus at 4th & King (close to AT&T Park) to Downtown San Francisco's Transbay Transit Center. If approved, the California High Speed Rail system would use this extension as their San Francisco terminus. The extension is scheduled to open in 2019.
• – By late fall, Construction is expected to be completed on the north east extension of Calgary Alberta's light rail transit system, the C-Train. The extension will add 2 new stations in northeast Calgary at Martindale and Saddletowne.
• – Reopening of Saint Paul Union Depot in Minnesota to regularly scheduled train traffic. The depot last saw trains on 30 April 1971, the day before Amtrak began operation.
