2022 Commonwealth Games

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will feature 71 countries from the Commonwealth. A host will be decided in future years. If the same schedule as the last three Games is used, the winning bid should be announced in November 2015.

Potential bids

Africa

• Durban, South Africa

The coastal city in South Africa is planning a possible bid for the games following its decision not to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. If Durban were to host the games, it would be the first Commonwealth Games held in Africa.^[1]

• Abuja, Nigeria

It has been suggested that if Abuja won their bid to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, then they may bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. ^[2] However their bid for the Youth Olympics was not submitted to the IOC due to a lack of government support. ^[3] Abuja bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games but lost to Glasgow.

Asia

• Singapore

It has been indicated by Singapore's Director of the Sports Division in it's Ministry of Community Development, Koh Peng Keng, that Singapore could potentially host the Commonwealth Games. Singapore hosted the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. ^[4]

• Hambantota, Sri Lanka

Hambantota bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games but lost to Gold Coast. Following their defeat Ajith Nivard who served as co-chairman of the bid suggested that Hambantota could bid again. Despite Hambantota's failure to secure the 2018 games, the city is moving ahead with the construction of most of the venues that would be needed to host the games. ^[5]

Europe

• Cardiff, Wales

In 2009 it was suggested that Cardiff might bid for the 2022 Games, with some events to be held in Newport and Swansea. A more recent report suggests from the sports events officials of Cadriff that they have abandoned the thoughts of 2022 for the 2026 bid cycle. ^[6][7]

North America

• Multiple cities in Canada

Canada is interested in pursuing a bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Multiple cities in Canada have expressed interest in bidding. ^[8] The mayor of Edmonton, Alberta stated in the February 6th edition of the Edmonton Journal that the city is exploring a possible bid on the 2022 Commonwealth Games.^[9]

Oceania

• Christchurch, New Zealand

After the major earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, the rebuilt city is planning to bid for the 2022 edition in order to introduce the city to the world. Christchurch previously hosted the Commonwealth Games (then British Commonwealth Games) in 1974.^[10] Christchurch's and any bid from the Oceania Region is now in doubt with the awarding of the 2018 games to Gold Coast, Australia. ^{[11] [12]}
