Review

Although T:me offshoot Em:t Recordings rapidly earned a reputation for diverse, uniformly high-quality releases from the likes of Woob, Gas, Russell Mills, Carl Stone, and others, few of the Nottingham-based label's releases are as relentless and demanding as this. Beatsystem's debut for Em:t, 2297, is heavy on digital signal processing, and moves through several styles of electronic music -- many of them brazenly abstract -- over the course of its 50-plus minutes. From deep, emotive electro-acoustic ambient and electronica to the starkest of minimalist post-classical, digital cut-up, and academic computer music, Pierce renders each with remarkable economy, inventiveness, and skill. ~ Sean Cooper, Rovi
