Review

This is a two-LP set that really delighted collectors when it was released in 1974. To celebrate the 25th year of the Prestige label, unissued material, alternate takes and a few rarities were compiled for this two-fer. Starting out with the very first Prestige recording (Lee Konitz's "Progression"), the set is highlighted by performances featuring Stan Getz (with the similar-sounding tenors of Al Cohn, Allen Eager, Brew Moore and Zoot Sims), Fats Navarro, Wardell Gray, Miles Davis (the alternate take of "Blue Room"), King Pleasure, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane (jamming "Blue Calypso" with a Mal Waldron group), Benny Golson, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon and Eric Dolphy among others. Much of this material has since appeared on CD but the attractive set is still worth acquiring. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
