The Second Tank Army was formed in January - February, 1943 on the basis of the 3rd Reserve Army of the Bryansk Front. Originally the Army comprised 11th and 16th Tank Corps 60th, 112th and 194th Rifle Divisions, 11th Guards separate tank brigade, 115th Rifle Brigade, 28th ski brigade and other units. In the middle of February the army has been included in the Soviet Central Front and in its(his) structure in February - March took part in offensive operation the a Bryansk direction, in July - August - in the Battle of Kursk and Черниговско - Припятской operations. In the beginning of September, 1943 it was removed from Stavka VGK reserve, in the middle of January, 1944 it joined the 1st Ukrainian Front and in its structure in the end of January participated in reflection of counterstrokes немецко - fascist armies on a Vinnitsa direction, in February - юго-to the west the cities of Korsun-Shevchenkovsky (Корсунь - Шевченковская operation). As part of the 2nd Ukrainian front, from the middle of June of 1944 1st Belorussian Front participated in Уманско - Ботошанской, Lublin - Brest, Варшавско - Познанской, East - Померанской offensive operations and the Battle of Berlin.

For services in battle the army became the 2nd Guards Tank Army (November 1944); almost all its(her) connections and a part награждены awards, the majority of them is awarded honourable names; over 103 thousand soldiers of army награждены awards and medals, 221 from them given the decoration of the Hero of the Soviet Union while Semyon Bogdanov was awarded this rank twice.

After the war ended the Army, now named Second Guards Red Banner Tank Army, was located with the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany with the staff in Fuerstenberg. But here in the composition of army from the times of war was preserved only 16th Guard TD (former 9th Guards Tank Corps). Although up to the 1970s it had some of its wartime units - 12th Guards Tank Division (former similar TK) and 35th Motor Rifle Division (former 1st MK), without considering that arrived as early as 1946. 25th TD. But 3 last divisions replaced at the end of the 1970s - the 94th Guards, 21st and 207th Motorised Rifle Divisions. In this composition the army was withdrawn to the Volga-Ural Military District (into Samara), it was disbanded and it is newly restored.
