2Wire, or not 2Wire, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in networks to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous dial-up connections, or to take up broadband against a sea of troubles, and with a 2Wire gateway end them? 2Wire's HomePortal and OfficePortal networking devices combine router and firewall functions, and allows multiple PCs and telephones to share a single broadband DSL or cable hookup. Its gateways connect devices to each other wirelessly or via phone or Ethernet wires. 2Wire also makes DSL filters and adapters. Alcatel-Lucent owns one-quarter of 2Wire. For in broadband what dreams may come when we have shuffled off these slow connections, must give us pause.
