Review

Put the question to a dozen fans of Latin music and it's possible you'd get varying answers, but RCA's choices as the most romantic Caribbean vocalists -- on its roster, at least -- were Puerto Rican bolero Bobby Capó and Venezuelan Alfredo Sadel, plus Cubans José A. Méndez and Bola de Nieve. Despite the regional variety, the double-disc collection 4 Grandes Romanticos del Caribe hangs together quite well; most of the tracks date from the '50s or '60s, an age that produced hundreds of fascinating performances but kept very little of them in print. It's the equivalent of four brief greatest-hits collections (with ten tracks each), highlights coming from Mendez on "La Gloria Eres Tu" and "Te Me Olvidas," Sadel on "Incertidumbre" and "Congoja," the masterful trova singer Bola de Nieve on "No Puedo Ser Feliz," and Bobby Capó on "Rumbo Perdido" and "Mi Mejor Cancióm." ~ John Bush, Rovi
