abbr.: MU; a group that is attached in glycosidic linkage to various sugars to form substrates useful in the assay of glycosidases. The highly fluorescent 4-methylumbelliferone is released on enzyme action, and can be measured in alkaline solution by its fluorescence (max. 448 nm, excitation at 364 nm), which is quenched in the glycosidic substrate.
