Bedhead's 4-songEP19:10 was recorded live, in one take, at the Kessler Community Church in Dallas, TX. In this intimate setting, the group's typically subdued material is stripped of the unkempt bursts of noise that popped up on its debut, 1994's WhatFunLifeWas. The results can resemble the Velvet Underground ("Heiszahobit," "Dead Language"), offering revisions of the punk godfathers à la "Pale Blue Eyes." The Kadane brothers sometimes come across like younger versions of Lou Reed himself, singing over these simple chord progressions. Exposed by the one-take approach, 4-songEP sounds like a group of demos. While Bedhead's music has always been tempered with a great deal of restraint, they can be a bit too subdued here. The group test-drives the languid "Heiszahobit," their three guitars intertwining listlessly. The temperature begins to rise midway through "Dead Language," though there is a distracting strain in the singer's voice. Bedhead then shows how trademark elements work to its advantage on the last two songs. "What I'm Here For" manages to create the most heat as it progresses with more deliberate force and perfect pacing. The group even manages to reformat Joy Division's "Disorder" to fit the fold, subduing some of the original's nervous energy. The slow-burning dynamics that bring emotion to much of Bedhead's music don't translate as effectively on 4-songEP. It would have been difficult to capture such breathtaking sonic inconsistencies with the band's one microphone approach.
