(b Gainsborough, 16 Jan 1740; d Rycote, 26 Sept 1799). English patron and composer. He was associated with J.C. Bach and C.F. Abel in London, and met (and was influenced by) Haydn, who began to set The Invocation of Neptune at his suggestion. He composed mostly songs and other vocal works, including a choral Representation of the Execution of Mary Queen of Scots in Seven Views (1790).
