(triptans)
Drugs that stimulate receptors for the neurotransmitter
serotonin (5-hydrotryptamine; 5-hydroxytryptamine (= serotonin)) and are used in the treatment of
migraine. They have effects similar to serotonin, rapidly reversing the dilatation of the blood vessels in the brain that is thought to cause a migraine attack. 5-hydroxytryptamine (= serotonin)
1 agonists are used to treat acute attacks of migraine; they should not be taken with other drugs used for this purpose. See
almotriptan;
eletriptan;
frovatriptan;
naratriptan;
rizatriptan;
sumatriptan;
zolmitriptan.
Side effects, precautions, and interactions with other drugs: see entries for individual 5-hydroxytryptamine (= serotonin)
1 agonists.
