Review

On their sixth album, Sister Machine Gun continues to do a superb job of incorporating a variety of musical styles into their post-industrial electro-rock; the hip-hop vocals of "Loser," the funky "Down On Me," the Pink Floyd-esque "Release," and the acoustic folk and bluesy harmonica of "Ten Minute God" are all good examples. Unfortunately, most of these experiments have been tried before by other bands, and have already become cliché. The impeccable musicianship and production on 6.0 nevertheless succeeds to breathe new life into them. Regrettably, the lyrics on 6.0 are as prosaic as its title. While they return consistently to such complex themes as alienation, perseverance, and frustration, they rely on trite phrases: "I'd rather run away from you," Chris Randall sings on "Automaton," "cause I'd just fall apart whenever you are near." Prosaic as it may be at times, 6.0 demonstrates beautiful musicianship, and consistently catchy and often danceable grooves. Miguel Turanzas' diverse guitar talent is a perfect complement to Randall's sultry voice and layered electronics. Though there's nothing to terribly disappoint on 6.0, there's also very little to intrigue. ~ Rich Goldman, Rovi
