Astronomy

Hindu astronomer and mathematician Brahmagupta denies the rotation of Earth, although most other Indian astronomers of his time believe Earth rotates. See also 510 ce Astronomy. (See biography.)

Mathematics

Brahmagupta writes Brahmasphuta siddhaānta ("the opening of the universe"). It concerns mensuration, trigonometry, and algebra, including excellent work on Diophantine equations and the first rules for operating with zero and with negative numbers as well as a method for approximating square roots.
