64 Zoo Lane is a children's cartoon created by An Vrombaut.
Synopsis
It features a 7 year-old girl named Lucy who lives at 64 Zoo Lane, next door to a Zoo. Each night she is told a story by the animals present there. Characters include Georgina the Giraffe, Nelson the Elephant, Tickles and Giggles the Monkeys, Boris the Bear, and Molly the Hippopotamus. The cartoon emphasizes friendship and responsibility. At the story's end, friendly morals are discussed, then bed-time is declared. Georgina deposits Lucy into bed via the bedroom window (later episodes show Lucy yawning then sleeping soundly in bed; in the original episodes she would be lulled to sleep by the storytelling itself).
There are many opportunities for learning: exploring language and vocabulary are enhanced by the use of intonation and expression in the character's voices and the themes of the animals' stories support social and emotional issues, including friendships and helping and caring for others.[1]
In the United Kingdom 64 Zoo Lane is shown on CBeebies, often as part of the lineup of the Bedtime Hour, and on Playhouse Disney. In the United States 64 Zoo Lane formerly aired on Nick Jr. at 1:00 AM & 1:30 AM, but currently longer.
In the U.S. version, Lucy's voice is given an American makeover, but the voices of the animals and the theme song remain with British accents. The British version features the voice of Alice Hearing as Lucy. It was a popular kid cartoon There is also a Scottish Gaelic version of 64 Zoo Lane, Rathad an Sutha, shown in Scotland on BBC Two Scotland. The Theme song is sung in Gaelic. It is produced by BBC Alba.
The creator of the TV series, An Vrombaut, also wrote and illustrated 6 64 Zoo Lane picture books, based on stories from the TV series.
In Australia, the show is shown on ABC2 on Saturday mornings at 13:00 PM.
