Sci & Tech Chronology: In the year 796

Construction

The only building of any importance erected in western Europe between the fall of Rome and 1000 ce is the minster in Aix-la-Chapelle, constructed as a tomb for Charlemagne, started this year and completed by Pope Leo III in 805; it is destroyed in the following century by Norman raiders and re-erected in 983 by Emperor Otto III.
