Review

Fubu (Breton for "mosquito" or "midget') is one of the long-forgotten post-Alan Stivell, post-Gwendal bands who performed Breton-influenced folk music. They recorded for a short period of time in the early to mid-'80s prior to the Celtic and world music explosions. This retrospective includes samplings from their most productive period. The music ranges from traditional Breton music and original pieces performed in traditional fashion to original compositions utilizing updated touches including drum machine and synthesizers. Most of their material, however, has a folk or traditional flavor as they rely on accordion, hurdy-gurdy, whistles, cabrette auvergnate, and bouzouki to propel their waltzes, bourrées, and polkas. ~ Dave Sleger, Rovi
