The Utrecht Psalter provides the oldest pictorial evidence of a crank handle for turning wheels in the West, nearly a thousand years after the Chinese use of such handles; the illustration shows a man sharpening a sword on a grindstone. There is some archaeological and written evidence that the Romans knew of the crank, but crank handles were not in regular use in Roman times except for hand mills. See also 350 Tools.
