Al-Khwarizmi's Al-jabr wa'l muqaābalah ("restoring and simplifying"), known in the West as Algebra, gives methods for solving all equations of the first and second degree with positive roots. From this work comes the origin of the word algebra. Al-Khwarizmi's own name is the source of the words algorism and algorithm. See also 628 Mathematics; 1075 Mathematics.
